The Board of Directors bears the ultimate accountability for the success and sustainability of a nonprofit organization. Therefore, board appointments becomes the most crucial decision the ED/CEO and Board Chair must make. Unfortunately in some cases the appointment process becomes an exercise in filling a seat. This often results disengagement and a lack of commitment.
When recruiting board members or forming a board for the first time, there are a few key factors to consider. 1.) Choose someone who not only cares about your mission but is interested in achieving it. It is easier to find someone who cares about your mission, it is much more difficult to find someone who is willing to financially support, advocate, and be enthusiastic about achieving it. 2.) Choose someone with the necessary skills and experience required to fulfill your mission. Not just anyone will do. A blend of vital skills and experience is the key to success. 3.) Choose a strategic thinker who is committed to the mission. They should be committed to the organization's long-term success.
Choosing the right person offers the greatest opportunity for board engagement and commitment.
